Hi Folks,
I am in need of lessons that will teach on-line safety to K - 6 grade students. Now let me give you the background of my dilemma. I will be teaching from a cart going from one classroom to another. There will be only one computer in the classroom which I will use to project the lessons. The class will be 40 to 45 minutes long. I am looking for a video clip and then discussion questions to follow or activities that require little to no materials needed.
I have found the Professor Garfield's Internet Safety and You (this is a Thinkfinity site). Has anyone tried these lessons? My school had Brain PO P (which is wonderful) but it is too costly for them to continue the subscription, so now I am on the hunt.
Thank you so much for your input.

Hi Jinny,
Have you tried the materials from Common Sense Media? Another Thinkfinity.org partner that is all about online safety. Many of the highlighted videos/lesson plans are for the 6-8 grade levels, but they do cover the majority of grade levels. Just do a quick search of their site. The best part -- they're FREE!

Thank you Jenn. I will certainly check this out.
Hi Jinny,
This is a great question and very important topic. There are several other discussions in the Community about Internet Safety that may provide some resource ideas for you. You may want to check out the following:
I am glad you found the Garfield site. The videos there are great!

OnGuard Online! is a site by the Federal Trade Commission that breaks down complex security issues into simple explanations, games and videos.
GetNetWise is a site that has a lot of information for children regarding their privacy and security.
Hi Brent,
I just took a quick look at Get Net Wise. There seems to be lots of information on many topics and age levels. The On Guard Online! also looks very promising. Thank you for your suggestions.

Hi Jinny,
I just learned about another website that has some good lessons on Internet use for children. I recommend looking at Learn with Clicky for resources on Internet Safety and Netiquette.

I use the site Common Sense Curriculum. You have to sign up for an account but it is free. They have lesson plans for Internet Safety, research skills, etc. The students enjoy the lessons and I can modify lessons if I need to.
I agree with the others above. I use the Common Sense Media site with a 7th grade computer class. The lessons are thorough, easy to use and the kids do seem to enjoy them. Since it is a computer class, I do try to throw in an activity using a computer program like WORDLE to create a collage of their digital footprint, an internet scavenger hunt after completing the research skills, etc.
ThinkB4U has launched a new series of web safety videos and tutorials from Google and its partners. As you scroll down the homepage, you will see that ThinkB4U is divided into several sections designed for students, parents, and educators. The site offers suitable material for elementary, middle, and high school students.
"Each section addresses nine different topics related to safe and responsible use of the Internet and cell phones. The sections include short videos about the topics, a short written lesson, and some interactive games on the topics of responsible use of the Internet and of cell phones."
You will also find some additional resources for K-6 grade students located in another discussion--What are some good Internet safety resources to use with your students?
Because the world is so focused on technology, teachers and parents really need to teach children and young adults how to be responsible digital consumers.
