We'd like to ask each of you to introduce yourself to the group. Remember, we have two instructors who don't really know you yet and two schools with educators who don't know each other. The plan is that the grant project participants from TIES, Mounds View Public Schools and Minneapolis Public Schools will be using this Thinkfinity Community Group throughout the online workshop and throughout the length of the grant. We hope you will be partners for each other throughout this project.
What should you say? Plan to write a paragraph or two that lets us know who you are. Need ideas? Only number 1 is required so to speak. Share other information as you feel it would help us know about you.
Mary and I have already posted our introductions. Read about us and maybe that will give you ideas, but don't worry. We always get carried away and write too much! You can still just write a paragraph or two!
Finally, check back and read the introductions of the others in your class, especially those who you don't already know. Comments and discussion are appreciated and encouraged.
Hi! I'm Cara, and I'm one of the instructors for this online workshop. I will also be helping to facilitate your grant work throughout the year. I'm very excited about this project, and I'm super glad we're getting started so early in the year.
I'm in my 22nd year of teaching - can it be true? I started my career as a middle school English teacher with classes on grammar and writing. (Don't worry, I've forgotten most of what I used to know
.) From there I became a computer lab teacher, then a building technology coordinator. I spent a few years as part time faculty at Hamline coordinating their Graduate School of Education's technology course work. Now I'm happily at TIES and don't plan to ever leave. I teach a wide variety of workshops both face-to-face and online. I also work on the TIES Conference, various seminars, present at conferences, etc. And I work only a few blocks from home - very convenient.
Speaking of home, I have a wonderful husband who puts up with a lot from his rather noisy and overly emotional wife. Our two sons, Joel (20) and Mikey (17) - how did they get so old?, are great. They're very active and ensure that I rarely drive a car because one of them always has it. Joel's at Mankato State studying to be an athletic trainer. Mikey will join him at Mankato State next year (if he passes his finals this week and actually gets to graduate from DeLaSalle) where he has no idea what he will study. There is no doubt in my mind that Mikey will have fun. There is some doubt in my mind that the university can survive both of my boys in the same place at the same time. No, they will not live together as I couldn't survive that much whining.
I want to encourage you to contact me with questions or comments through this course as well as the year of the grant. This is an excitng opportunity for all of us. I will get an email notification when you post to this group on Thinkfinity as well as if you post to the HELP Forum on Moodle. That way I won't miss out on realizing you have a need. Otherwise, just email at cara.hagen@ties.k12.mn.us.
Keep in touch.
Cara
I am Karen Hummel, teacher at Edgewood MS. I teach 6th grade math and science in intervention classes. I also assist with the special education testing in our building. I am in my 30th year as an educator. I started my teaching career in Ames, Iowa working with Senior High students with severe cognitive and physical disabilties. I continued in special education teaching elementary students with varying levels of special education need while moving across Iowa chasing my husband as he settled into his profession. I became an educational consultant and staff development provider for 11 years, working with Des Moines metro area school districts prior to moving to MN and Edgewood (still chasing that husband). Being back in the classroom has been very invigorating as this is a most exciting time in K-12 education.
I like reading suspense novels, visiting my adult children, travel, anything outdoors, and a clean bathroom really settles my heart. There is a lot I haven't done yet but have yet to find something I don't like to do...just somethings I would do before others.
My husband, Alan, and I have four children. Two are out of college working (parents really enjoy that first official paycheck more than the young person!). Our youngest son is a freshman at UMD and our youngest is a senior in high school, preparing for college.
I hope to gain a clearer understanding of project based learning and steal really cool ideas from the rest of you, but promise to give you credit.
Hi Everyone!
I'm Mary, also an instructor for your online Thinkfinity workshop. I currently work as a Technology Integration Development and Outreach Facilitator at TIES. I've been working here since June 2011. I know that title is quite a handle, isn't it? TIES created it for me and offered me a wonderful opportunity so I won't complain!
In terms of my work life, I started working at the Minnesota Department of Education many, many years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Well, maybe not that long ago, but there were a lot of lizards around MDE at that time anyway. I worked in information technologies for several years, and in the early 1990s when schools started to put in networks to access the Internet, I ended up working with telecommunications planning for school districts, and that role quickly expanded to working more and more with instructional applications of technology to learning. I worked at MDE for over 28 years.
In spring 2008, I was offered a great opportunity to move to Moorhead and be director for the NW-LINKS telecommunications region. I spent three years working with 70 rural school districts and four regional public library systems up there. I managed a wide area network, procured Internet access, and also did a lot of staff development for the school districts in the region. I provided workshops for teachers and administrators on Thinkfinity resources, using technology in the classroom, video conferencing, and other topics.
Last spring, I was offered an opportunity to come work here at TIES, and I was thrilled to accept. At TIES I do a lot of training for teachers on various technology topics, develop new courses, help with the TIES Conference, and represent TIES on a number of different advisory groups.
On the personal front, I am single with no children, but I do have 14 incredible nieces and nephews who think I am the coolest aunt in the whole world, and I work very hard to undo all the correct things their parents tried to teach them. I am one of 9 children so I have a lot of experience in group dynamics.
I am a voracious reader. I am madly in love with the country of Ireland and go there every chance I get. I am very passionate about learning and sharing ideas - and I think Thinkfinity is one of the greatest things since sliced bread. By the time you finish this online course I hope you will agree!
I look forward to meeting all of you online. If there is ever any help you need with the course or any question I can answer, please don't hesitate to contact me. You can call me at 651-999-6510 or e-mail me at mary.mehsikomer@ties.k12.mn.us. When you get into the Thinkfinity Community, please feel free to "friend" me if you like - that will enable us to get to know each other better and I can share all the great resources I have found on Thinkfinity with you.
All the best,
Mary
Hi Peter!
Welcome to the STEM grant project. What was meant by the last question was what you hope to get out of the Thinkfinity STEM Grant awarded to Moundsview based on the project proposal submitted by the district. No worries, as we move forward, the specifics of the project for your district will be shared. The main goal is to get participant teachers in your district the professional development they need to begin designing courses that incorporate STEAM concepts (science, technology engineering, arts, math). Hopefully, your participation in this course and learning more about PBL will take you a long way towards that goal.

I am involved politically, heavily, I fish trout, ATV, RV, and lots of other things.
I don't like being told what to do, I prefer being asked.
Rita is my wife I have a stepdaughter and my son is getting married next year.
I hope to gain ######more knowledge base for use in classroom.
Same as above. The ipads are proving to be an asset and a liability, making correct and proper use will be my hope and the kids benefit.

What do you like to do?
- Currently I am in school going after my administrative degree, so as far as what I like to do I feel like a large portion of my time is spent working on that. Outside of school, I love to run and be active. I enjoy sports, cooking, and spending time with my family.
What don't you like to do?
- I don't like paperwork or busy work.
What's going on at home and who is part of your family?
- I am not married, but have a serious relationship. I live with a friend from college right now, it's a pretty busy life at home.
What do you hope to get out of this online workshop?
- My goals for this workshop are to get a better understanding of project based learning and how to assist others in better incorporating it into a class. The problems I think we are going to run into are the constraints of the standards for each subject area and how project based learning fits into that.
What about the whole grant project? What do you want to get from that?
For the grant project, I would like people to experience how the difference of project based learning versus the traditional classroom and see the benefits of getting kids interested versus asking them to pay attention.

Some of my bigger interests are travel (next trip Greece), gardening and gourmet and ethnic cooking. I also love to read but a lot of this time is spent keeping up with popular middle school series. I get in a good adult quality trash book in once in a while too. I do not enjoy cleaning up the kitchen after a major cooking project and I do not like to dust.
My husband and I live in a 1916 Arts and Crafts home on a small lake. I love my house and location and I am very happy that my husband is handy around the house. We have raised three children and the youngest son, (18) and a cat are the only ones still at home. Our daughter and her husband and two kids live close by and our other son is newly graduated from college and is currently living in China. We babysit our two grand children a lot.
I feel challenged about this training because it is all on-line but I am excited about what I see and what I can learn. The resources that I have explored look exciting and innovative. I look forward to further exploration and of all the resources and tools available for use in my curriculum and at our school.
The project based learning is intriguing because it integrates so many areas. Motivation for learning is also a big piece in this type of learning and I like the fact that it not only opens up more options for students, but staff as well. It also opens up more opportunities for stafff collaboration. It will be fantastic to have this educational resource and community for support and networking.

My wife and I have been married 3 years and live in south Minneapolis with our boxer and bulldog. My wife is just finishing nursing school.
I would like to find some resources that can be used to help our staff in making the transition towards PBL.
My name is Gina Fosse, I am a Spanish Teacher in Mounds View (district 621). I teach 4th-8th grade Spanish.
I love to hang out with my niece Lauren (4) and Nephew Dylan (8). I spend lots of time with the family, usually skiing, skating, or eating. I love swimming, and anything you can do in the water! Pools, lakes, rivers, oceans! I love it! I like getting organized, and doing photo projects. I like movies, and all things Spanish--books, movies, songs, etc. Traveling is great (especially to any of the 21 Spanish speaking countries, I may be a little biased...) and I also enjoy going through the carwash (not often, I try to be eco-friendly).
I don't like doing worksheets, taxes, filling out applications, or other official paper work. ![]()
I also HATE watching scary movies.
My husband is Matt. He is going back to school to be a teacher, like me.
I don't have kids or pets. I have 3 siblings, we all live close to each other.
I want to learn somethings that I can use this year in my Spanish classroom, as well as get some ideas and resources for next year when we become a STEAM school. I also hope to do some networking and get ideas and inspiration from other people.
I hope that it helps students learn. That they will be inspired to learn, not just for school, but for life. I hope it will help them develop problem solving skills, and make them think outside of the box. No more cookie cutter projects, but real learning and exploration that occurs at school.
Hi! My name is Darcy LaPanta and I teach 7th grade English at Edgewood Middle School. I also do a few other "things" at school including helping to implement STEAM next fall.
I love to read, take pictures and watch my kids play sports. I have 2 boys (11 & 9) who are very active~ so their activities have become my social life. However, I do find time to work out (not as often as I would like) and I've been in a book club for 11 years.
PBL is super exciting to me. I hope to transform some of my projects into project-based learning models. Our school is going in the right direction for kids...and I feel really good about the energy that is being created around STEAM. I look forward to learning a lot over the next year!
Steph Krebs, Mounds View School District – Edgewood Middle School, Life Skills (DCD) teacher.
I grew up in Minnesota, went to a university in Wisconsin and have spent the last three years teaching in Alaska. I loved living there (camping, hiking, dip net fishing, snowboarding, climbing mountains etc.) but I wanted to be closer to my family.
I like to travel (favorite places so far Australia, New Zealand and Western/Independent Samoa) and try new things. Very into arts/crafts (mosaic, scrapbooking, beading, knitting etc.).
I live in an apartment in Roseville with my boyfriend and our kitty Meatball. My boyfriend’s son stays with us on the weekends and we are going to buy a house this summer. My boyfriend is going to school to be a paramedic and I start grad school in March (Technology in Education).
I am so excited to start STEAM next year and hope to learn more about Project Based Learning through this online workshop. I would like to incorporate PBL in all my classes and am always looking for new materials. (Most of my “curriculum” is what I have found on the internet and I have my students for all three years of Middle School. We need variety!)
My name is Kimberlee Adams and I am a Teacher on Special Assignment at Northeast Middle School is Minneapolis. In addition to coordinating several programs at Northeast I also teach an intergraded reading, social studies, and science class with two talented colleagues. My favorite part of my work day is after school programming where I coordinate the theater arts program. The staff is great to work with and he kids are ton of fun. I am hoping to some day intergrade technology beyond lights and sounds into our program.
I live with my partner Angie and little black poodle JD. We also have a beagal that visits us part time named Ellie. Ellie is our princess. We live in Minneapolis and love the lakes, restaurants, schools, friends, and community. My niece Isla is also a regular visitor and a joy to have around. I love to travel and have been to several different countries all around the world. Hoping to visit South America next.
I am hoping to gain a basic understanding of Project Based Learning in the classroom. I would like to develop at least one unit that proves to be successful with my students. As for the grant project I am still unsure. Our fabulous media specialist is spearheading the grant and I look forward to working with her and several other colleagues.
Hello,
My name is Lynn Lurvey and I am a reading/language arts teacher and reading coach at Northeast Middle School. I am just logging in today because I had to get extra help in figuring out how to access our group. I am slightly techno-challenged at times. I love my sixth grade students and the great colleagues I work with each day.
I live in Minneapolis with my husband Joel. We have three kids. Two are overseas right now - one in the Middle East and one in London (adventurous people!) and my youngest is a senior at Patrick Henry. I have a very short commute to work each day - a pleasant 4 block walk.
I like to make things - meals, quilts, crafts...I also like learning and I am currently finishing an MA in Literacy Education.
I am hoping to use what I learn in this class to provide more individualized learning opportunities for my students. I also hope to add what I can to the units we are creating for the STEM project. I am glad to be a part of this learning community.
I'm a little slow getting going on this because I had to finish up a different course during the first week, and then I think I was just out-of-steam last week. Now I'm ready to get going ... especially since I've had co-workers ask me questions about things ... I feel bad that I haven't been able to help them out. Plus, I'm looking forward to learning/revisiting the thinkfinity resources. A few years ago I did quite a bit of looking through the site as I was working on a lesson plan database for Metronet ... but I haven't really used it since then, and I think it is too good of a resource to be wasting. I think the people from our school who are involved in the training will be great at disseminating what we learn to the rest of our staff.
Sorry about this

Allright, I 'm trying to make sure I'm current everywhere and realized I never responded to some of the original posts. Here goes!
I'm Eric Johnson and I work at Edgewood Middle School in the Moundsview school district. I am a band director here.
I like to perform and play music and play trombone and tuba in a variety of rock and jazz groups around the Twin Cities.
I don't like to clean areas of my house that are not the kitchen.
My family is me, my wife, and my 13 month baby Annelise. She is the sweetest baby ever and I love spending time with her.
I hope to get a better handle on how to plan and run a successful project based learning class that we will all be implementing in my school next year.
As far as the grant goes, I'm not sure yet, I have to talk to my building coordinators to see what's available to me.
