New Spanish Resources Help Families Support Reading

Posted by tengrrl on Mar 31, 2011 5:57:47 PM

ReadWriteThink has a new collection of tips and activities translated into Spanish for use at home that you can use to explain how families can help their children develop as skilled readers and writers.

How do you use the resources?

  1. Choose the materials from the collection that fits your needs. The collection covers a range of important literacy topics, such as “How to Help a Child Choose a Book” and “How to Be Safe Online.”
  2. Print the materials and send them home to encourage families to support what is being taught in the classroom.
  3. Use the a  parent cover sheet in Spanish to  explain how the materials support students’ literacy development and to point families to the collection online.
  4. Encourage families  to  search the site for additional materials that meet their own needs or interests.

Can the collection support English-speaking families as well?

Yes, it can. You’ll find the same activities and tips in English listed alongside the resources in Spanish. The process for using the resources is the same. Simply use the parent cover sheet in English to explain the materials  to English-speaking families and point families to the resources that fit your teaching goals.

How can I be sure which version to send home with a student?

The easiest solution is to let families choose for themselves. Print the letter double-sided, with the English version on one side and the Spanish version on the other. Family members can read the information in the version that’s most appropriate. Since the online collection includes the resources in both Spanish and English, family members can choose the appropriate version on the website as well.

Have ideas on how to improve the collection?

As the ReadWriteThink site looks to provide additional resources in Spanish, please share your feedback on this current collection by answering a brief 9-question survey by May 1, 2011. Your feedback will help guide future site development and ensure that resources meet the needs of teachers and parents alike.
