Technology in Education (TIE) Colorado is holding their annual conference again at beautiful Copper Mountain, June 19 - 21st. If you have never been, you should consider it. Health at Every Size (HAES) is a lifestyle that encourages healthy eating and enjoyable physical activity as a way to feel better and live longer. Unlike other programs, it does not believe weight loss through dieting is the way to become healthy.
Scientific evidence supports this idea. In a 2006 study by researchers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 78 obese women were placed into either the Health at Every Size program or a traditional weight-loss program. Women in the weight-loss program were instructed to eat less, count calories, and exercise more.
The Health at Every Size group was encouraged to eat when they were hungry and to appreciate the feeling of fullness, to make healthy food choices, and to find a style of physical activity that was most enjoyable for them. They were not given a list of "forbidden foods," nor were they told to exercise to lose weight. They were also given techniques to build their self-esteem and to increase the confidence they had in their bodies.
This fellowship program is designed to provide approximately 10 international arts managers with an intensive four-week arts management program for three consecutive summers. Selected managers will come to Washington, D.C. to study at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. International fellows participate in seminars, group projects, individual mentorships and practical rotations supervised by Institute faculty and Kennedy Center senior staff. Arts managers with a minimum of five years experience in an administrative capacity will be selected for the program. Fellows receive round trip air transportation, lodging during the duration of the program, per diem, program materials, and visa fees.

Geography Awareness Week (GAWeek) is an annual public awareness program that encourages citizens young and old to think and learn about the interconnectedness of our world.
Celebrate GAWeek this year by discovering the adventure in your own community! Challenge friends, classmates, and family members to complete missions and earn badges in photography, storytelling, mapping, and taking action. GAWeek was established by Presidential proclamation in the United States in 1987 and is organized by National Geographic Education Programs (NGEP). Each year more than 100,000 people actively participate in GAWeek through activities, events, lessons, games, and challenges. America celebrates Thanksgiving Day today.
Use Sarah's story as inspiration for students to think about things they can urge others to do to make a difference in their communities. With students, brainstorm a list of ways that you can make the community better. Use Read-Write-Think's interactive Letter Generator tool and its additional tips to have students write letters urging action, just as Sarah Hale did 140 years ago. This lesson plan is geared toward grades 5-12.

Myth and Truth: The "First Thanksgiving"
By exploring myths surrounding the Wampanoag, the pilgrims, and the "first Thanksgiving," this lesson asks students to think critically about commonly believed myths regarding the Wampanoag Indians in colonial America. Students will begin by considering the difference between myth and historical truth by reading "Of Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford. They will then, in a full-class discussion, reflect on common myths related to the first Thanksgiving. By using a "myth-breaking" process, groups of students will further explore one myth commonly believed about the Wampanoag and the pilgrim settlers. Finally, students will share their findings in group presentations.
For grades K-2:
Packing the Pilgrim's Trunk: Personalizing History in the Elementary Classroom
This theme exploration helps students explore who the Pilgrims were, learn about their trip aboard the Mayflower, think about what it was like to move to a new world and discover how they adapted and built new lives at Plymouth Colony. But more importantly, it helps students discover connections between their own life experiences and those of the Pilgrims, making history interesting, meaningful, and relevant. Students us a KWL chart, books and Websites to learn about the Pilgrims, complete hands on activities to role play and compare their lives to Pilgrim children's lives and plan a Thanksgiving friendship feast to celebrate their learning.
