Science NetLinks was recently awarded 3 Interactive Media Awards for its newly redesigned website. Science NetLinks won the Best in Class award in the education, nonprofit and science/technology categories.

For most of 2011 the Science NetLinks team worked with the design firm, Blenderbox, to evalute all Science NetLinks content and brainstorm possibilities for effectively showcasing its resources on the redesigned website. It was important to Science NetLinks for users to find resources easily and to show users content that they probably didn't know existed. After many, many discussions and meetings, Blenderbox, had the information they needed to create some incredibly dynamic and smart designs. The new site was launched at the end of October 2011 and in early 2012, the site got noticed.

As stated in an article published by AAAS, "Anna Lawrence, spokesperson for the Interactive Media Awards, explained that Science NetLinks was entered in the competition under the science/technology category. 'The judges were so impressed that they gave it an award under the nonprofit and education categories as well,' she said. 'To win three awards for one entry is very rare and is just a testament to the quality and professionalism of this work.'"

The Science NetLinks team is very proud of the work they accomplished during the redesign and of design and navigation that Blenderbox developed.  Be sure to check out the new site and take a look at the blog post, Take Us for a Test Drive, to learn about some of the new features.

President Obama has issued a formal proclaimation declaring today, August 26th 2011, "Women's Equality Day" calling "upon the people of the United States to celebrate the achievements of women and recommit ourselves to the goal of gender equality in this country."

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2011/08/25/presidential-proclamation-womens-equality-day

In answer to this call, EDSITEment would like to share a number of resources which celebrate the historical acheivement of women who have devoted their lives to this cause.  These lessons help students begin to appreciate the deeply entrenched opposition the early Women's Rights crusaders had to overcome - perhaps still have to overcome - to move our nation toward the goal of gender equality yet to be fully realized.

No, not Harry! Today marks the 145st birthday of Helen Beatrix Potter! born July 28, 1866.

This timeless English author, illustrator, and conservationist is best known for her beautifully rendered children's books especially the incoriggible Peter Rabbit character many of us grew up being read aloud from his escapades

The Tale of Peter Rabbit came to life as a picture letter to comfort a little 5 yr old boy the author/illustrator knew who had been homebound by a long illness. Potter printed 250 copies of the story in a private press in 1901 in time for Christmas that year.  They sold out like hotcakes at a shilling each, forcing the author to print another 200 copies.  The following year it was formally published with 8000 copies - it became one of the best selling books of all time - The Tale of Peter Rabbit has never been out of print since!

Students will be interested in discovering how a Victorian childhood compares to the experience of being a kid nowadays?  Take them through EDSITEment Lesson: Beatrix Potter's Naughty Animal Tales.

Activity 2. Part One explores Beatrix's childhood and sugggests her family relationships and connections to her pets as an inspiration for her later work; Part Two engages students to produce their own watercolors as illustrations for their own animal stories.

The Verizon Foundation is proud to announce that our content partner, the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), and the Black Caucus of NCTE are sponsoring a 22-year tradition that seeks to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month: urging schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, community and professional organizations, and interested citizens to join over a million readers in hosting and coordinating Read-Ins in their communities.

We encourage the members of our Thinkfinity Community to support this event, also endorsed by our content partner the International Reading Association (IRA), by hosting, participating in, and The specified message was not found. a Read-In any time during the month of February.

How It Works

Hosting a Read-In can be as simple as bringing together friends to share a book, or as elaborate as arranging public readings and media presentations that feature professional African American writers. You do not need to register in advance to participate.

To be counted as participants, simply:

  1. Select books authored by African Americans; (reading lists are available)
  2. Hold your event any day during the month of February; and
  3. Report your results by submitting the 2011 African American Read-In Report Card.

Visit NCTE's Read-In feature page to download a printable PDF packet with instructions,  including a news release, host invitation,  and information on how to  submit the Report Card.

Participants—Tell Us About It!

Will you be hosting or participating in a reading, or have you been to one already? Describe your experience in our discussion The specified message was not found. We will share all your responses with NCTE. You can also send NCTE articles from newspapers, school notices, photographs (please attach written permission to use), church flyers or any other information pertaining to your Read-In to Linda Walters at NCTE Headquarters.

In past years, over a million readers of all ethnic groups  from the United States, the  District of Columbia, the West Indies,  African countries, and more have  participated.

Featured Group: Learning Math

Posted by christine Aug 30, 2010

A lot of community members are taking advantage of the ability to create a group within the community for topic-specific or local groups, which is a terrific idea.

In addition to joining groups that are created for your state, city, school, or program, we invite you to take advantage of joining a group on general subjects that are specific to your interest, such as our new Learning Math group, where you'll exchange questions and ideas with our NCTM content partners. You'll also get to meet other educators in your field and find resources that mean the most to you.

For starters, check out our Great math problems for the beginning of the school year...!

One of the best things about the community is that we have the opportunity to hear from YOU—educators, parents, administrators, and students. We want to hear about your opinions, ideas, and needs so that we can produce the best educational materials for you.

The Thinkfinity content partners are active members of the community and join in discussions to help members find the right resources and to ask and answer questions. From time to time we will feature content partners' discussions about resources in development—add your voice to see your ideas take shape!
