Featured Group: Learning Math

Posted by christine Aug 30, 2010

A lot of community members are taking advantage of the ability to create a group within the community for topic-specific or local groups, which is a terrific idea.

In addition to joining groups that are created for your state, city, school, or program, we invite you to take advantage of joining a group on general subjects that are specific to your interest, such as our new Learning Math group, where you'll exchange questions and ideas with our NCTM content partners. You'll also get to meet other educators in your field and find resources that mean the most to you.

For starters, check out our Great math problems for the beginning of the school year...!

One of the best things about the community is that we have the opportunity to hear from YOU—educators, parents, administrators, and students. We want to hear about your opinions, ideas, and needs so that we can produce the best educational materials for you.

The Thinkfinity content partners are active members of the community and join in discussions to help members find the right resources and to ask and answer questions. From time to time we will feature content partners' discussions about resources in development—add your voice to see your ideas take shape!

Kick off this school year with great resources from Thinkfinity's Back to School collection!

My favorite has to be the set on creating a classroom community. What about you? Maybe this is the year to start a book club with your 4th graders, or to use blogs with your 10th grade writers so they can comment on one another's work.

Or maybe this is the year to push the envelope with more innovative tools. Have you used your interactive whiteboard with Science NetLink's Gravity Launch yet, or customized your own worksheets with Illuminations' Dynamic Paper tool?

Lastly, don't forget to check in with the Community for great ideas for Back to School night.

There's so much to explore and do. Let us know which was your favorite! (Some of ours are listed under tried & true.)

Necessary student skills include critical thinking, problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation.  But, you want to know how to combine them with traditional skills like reading, writing and arithmetic to help your students become 21st Century Learners.

I found this new Thinkfinity page on 21st Century Learners - http://www.thinkfinity.org/21-century-learners with great lesson plans, interactives, and Professional Development. Do you see resources here that you can use to help your students with the skills they need?

Perhaps you will want to sign up for Thinkfinity's free Reaching 21st Century Students with Verizon Thinkfinity webinar that I found on that page.  I know the instructor, Mark Moore, and always learn from him new resources and ways to use them in my classroom.
