The Persian Version

Posted by joe Jun 14, 2010

People are interested in Persia and why not? A mighty ancient empire of many different countries ranging from Egypt to Babylonian with an astonishing collection of  ethnic groups ruled over by a great king Cyrus. What happened when the empire took notice of, and tried to conquer,  the tiny collection of city states in Greece is the story which Herodotus tells in the Persian Wars. Recently a movie version of one of the famous battles of that war, at Thermopoyle, called 300 was a big hit with audiences around the world. Our lesson on the 300 Spartans at the Battle of Thermopolyae: Herodotus' Real History http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=735  would make a good summer reading project for an ambitious student.

Recently Al Browne, Verizon Foundation Vice President, Education & Technology, spoke with NCTE about summer learning loss and ways to address it with resources from Thinkfinity.

“Summer learning loss is one of those silent destroyers,” says Browne. “When competing with warm weather and outdoor activities, parents need easy access to educational resources that will keep their child excited about learning…Our summer programming will reflect this . . . and will give teachers and parents more tools to reduce the trajectory of summer learning loss.”

As students wrap up their schools year, how have you encouraged them to keep reading and learning this summer? Have you tried or shared any of Thinkfinity’s summer learning activities?

One of our most popular lessons on Greek Mythology  http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=234 just got a lot better. We added a podcast interview with Rick Riordan the author of the series of novels about Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Rick was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art a few weeks ago talking with Sean Hemingway the curator of Greek and Roman antiquities. Amid the marble statues and bronze figurines, they had quite an interesting conversation about the enduring significance of mythology for today's classrooms.
